New Player Guide
Your first steps into the world of Mystic
Connecting to Mystic
The easiest way to play Mystic MUD is through our web client:
- Navigate to mysticmud.com/game
- The client will automatically connect to the server
- You'll see a welcome message and login prompt
Use the toolbar at the top to change color themes, adjust font size, and access quick commands. On mobile devices, the interface is touch-optimized for easy play.
Creating Your Character
When you first connect, you'll be prompted to create a new character or log in with an existing one.
Step 1: Choose a Name
Pick a name for your character. Names should be:
- Fantasy-appropriate (no modern references)
- Unique (not already taken)
- Appropriate for a shared gaming environment
Step 2: Set a Password
Choose a secure password for your character. You'll need this to log in later.
Step 3: Select Your Race
Each race has unique strengths and weaknesses:
- Human - The baseline race; well-rounded with no penalties or bonuses, capable of excelling in any class
- Elf - Forest-dwelling with pointy ears; increased agility and affinity for magic, but lower strength
- Half-Elf - Offspring of human and elf; slightly larger than elves, with some of the elven magic talent
- Dwarf - Sturdy mountain folk; excellent miners, surprisingly powerful for their small stature, but lacking in appearance
- Gnome - Small with pointy ears; clever and nimble, making up in wits what they lack in brawn
- Halfling - The smallest race; very agile, but lacking in strength and hardiness
- Half-Orc - Imposing but ill-regarded; strong and hardy, with penalties to charisma and intelligence
- Selkie - A rare sea-dwelling race; equally at home in water and on land, immune to holds, with excellent physical traits. Cannot be Paladins or Knights
Step 4: Choose Your Class
Your class determines your abilities and playstyle:
- Fighter - Master of combat, high health and damage
- Mage - Powerful spells, lower health
- Cleric - Healing magic, decent combat
- Thief - Stealth and backstab abilities
- Ranger - Wilderness skills and ranged combat
- Paladin - Holy warrior combining combat and divine magic
- Bard - Versatile performer with music-based abilities
- Monk - Disciplined unarmed fighter with inner power
- Death Knight - Dark warrior wielding unholy combat magic
- Shaman - Coming soon
If you're new to MUDs, consider starting as a Human Fighter. This combination is forgiving and lets you learn the game mechanics without worrying about complex spell systems.

Exploring the World
Mystic MUD has over 20,000 rooms to explore. Here's how to navigate:
Reading Room Descriptions
When you enter a room or type look, you'll see:
- The room name
- A description of the area
- Visible exits (directions you can go)
- Items on the ground
- Other players or creatures present
Movement
Most movement uses cardinal directions:
north (n) south (s) east (e) west (w)
northeast (ne) northwest (nw) southeast (se) southwest (sw)
up (u) down (d) enter leave
Some areas are dangerous for new players. Stay near the starting city until you've gained some levels and equipment. If you see a warning about a dangerous area, heed it!
Combat Basics
Combat in Mystic is automatic once initiated. To start a fight:
kill <target>
For example: kill rat or kill goblin
During Combat
- Combat rounds happen automatically
- Watch your health points (HP)
- Type
fleeto attempt escape if things go badly - Use
wimpyto auto-flee at low health
Every new character starts with a beautiful rose in their inventory. Type hp on to activate a real-time HP/SP status line that updates during combat — it's one of the most useful things you can do before your first fight.
After Combat
- Defeated enemies may drop items or gold
- Type
get allto pick up items - Rest to recover health if needed
